Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to become creative and attracted by the arts. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could commit the day to literature, art or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote political activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how she could use the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay was able to use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she went to her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded diplomas in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was in her school. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was asked to check the trash at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, she chose to go on to a job as a publicist. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also established a range of social media and lifestyle networks, including those like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
