Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could continue her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was well-informed and taught her how she could use art as a method of expression. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the local town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma led her later on to produce a film on The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing to broadcast journalism while she was in her school. DuVernay began as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the task of watching the house and examining the rubbish of one jurors. The jury member was unhappy with her journalism duties, and decided to change to the business of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in the small studio that she worked in after her graduation. In 1999, she founded her own private company for public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. She also started several lifestyle and promotional networks for the urban beauty industry, including The Urban Beauty Collective.
